Περίληψη: In this article,we use the Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA) that is performed to estimate the correlation between vector variables by finding linear combinations of them that are strongly correlated. In our analysis, the components of the vector comprise the magnitude of the current earthquake and the temporal succession up to the next earthquake. The computation of canonical correlation is performed for earthquakes of magnitude 3.9<M<5.5 that occurred before 271 mainshocks (M>5.4) in the Greek territory during 1964-2018. The statistical significance of CCA is assessed with two ways. Simulations on multivariate time series with no inter-dependencies show that when the length of time series is low (n<4) the parametric test erroneously tends to reject the null hypothesis of the no correlated vector variables (type I error), whereas the randomness test does not. When inter-dependencies are present, the proposed randomness test tends to be equal sensitive in detecting the differences as the parametric test. The application that performed in real data coming by the Greek seismic catalog highlights the strong correlation between the last 5 successive earthquakes before the mains hock, so the CCA index may be useful in short term seismic hazard assessment.

This research forms part of the project ‘’Development and Application of Time-Dependent Stochastic Models in selected regions of Greece for assessing the Seismic Hazard” (MIS 5004504), which is implemented through the Operational Program "Human Resources Development, Education and Lifelong Learning" and is co-financed by the European Union (European Social Fund) and Greek national funds.
