Περίληψη: | In 1883, the 1st bureau of the Parisian Police began the systematic surveillance of the socialist lawyer, Panagiotis Argyriades, who arrived in Paris in the wake of the Paris Commune. Drawing on the abundant material, covering 17 years of surveillance, our proposal focuses on the ‘extrait de rapports’, namely different templates used by secret agents, policemen and correspondents, from 1883 to 1887, which provide information about public or/and private political meetings of the young lawyer. We examine the differentiated times; the time of political discussion and organization within the leisure time of the political subjects seems to be the par excellence labour time of the Parisian Police. Following the different attempts to reorganize the Parisian Police at the dawn of the Third French Republic, we examine the quest for time accuracy and precision in police discourse, since defining and measuring time seems to become an important element of training and professionalization of different police forces. In that sense, we explore the ways in which a form or a template can save time for bureaucracy, providing also a more efficient way in constructing an archive which must always be consulted and consultable. According to Michail Bakhtin, “form and content in discourse are one” since discourse is a social phenomenon. The sites and temporalities of political meetings will be considered, in the Bakhtinian sense, as a “remarkable chronotope” where the entire life of a political subject is laid bare, to be examined by the new state apparatus responsible for securing the continuation of the dominant order. In this context, we attempt to read the generic characteristics of the secret agents’ narrative. |
