| Περίληψη: | The present thesis comprises three essays-chapters exploring selected policy and institutional determinants of the dynamics of economic transformation. It focuses on the policy dimension of economic transformation during the great recession in Greece and the European South. The common underlying theme running through all chapters of this thesis consists in the investigation of the role of economic policies and institutions in driving structural change. The notion of structural change entails changes in the composition of production and the transformation of production and consumption patterns driven by policies to improve international competitiveness, investment and consumer welfare. The contributions of this thesis to the economic and policy literature comprise empirical findings and theoretical insights on how policy tools may achieve, or not, their initial objectives. We investigate policy effects in three dimensions of the Greek economy during the crisis that capture both the internal and the external market. In order to do so, the present thesis investigates how policy variables are related to the implementation success of structural reforms and the desired structural economic transformation. |
