| Περίληψη: | During the period 1935-1939 the British Empire and the Fascist Italy deteriorated their previously friendly relations. The Ethiopian campaign was the inception of this alteration and the Mediterranean Sea the main field of antagonism between the two powers. This new situation led the two powers to adopt precautious military measures against each other. The Dodecanese Islands, officially part of the Italian Kingdom under the Treaty of Lausanne of 1923, developed into one of the major Italian bases in the Eastern Mediterranean. The aim of this presentation is to discover the role and the importance of these Islands in the Italian and British strategy during the abovementioned period and to investigate the reasons and the alterations in their role in accordance to the international developments and finally their impact in both the Italian and British military planning and the Islands themselves. |
