Περίληψη: The importance of metropolitan areas as facilitators in the national development process is widely accepted, while, due to the change in production, distribution and consumption relations engendered by the increased economic globalisation, metropolises are characterised by a powerful control of the manufacturing production, financial flows and information, being in some cases more important -in relative terms- even than national states. In this context, the economies of scale and the concentration benefits that come from their population size, the consequently significant size of labour market, as well as their productivity levels, feed the metropolitan growth process constantly, and they consist important factors for the interpretation of the development differentials among the aforementioned areas. In the European space, the development differentials of the metropolitan areas, at least at the transnational level, seem quite high, a fact that forced the issue of the enbalancement of the European urban system into the Union spatial – development agenda. The aim of the present paper is to explore the trajectory of the inequalities of the European metropolitan space in terms of production, or alternatively, to detect the spatial concentration of the economic activity among metropolitan regions, and the European metropolitan space as a whole. By employing the broadly used Theil index, the degree of spatial concentration of employment, gross value added and labour productivity is examined. The analysis focuses on two geographical levels, that of the national metropolitan space of the European Union member-states, as well as that of the European metropolitan space, for the period 2003 - 2015. More specifically, the European space under analysis includes the member-states of EU-28 that have at least two metropolitan areas, while for the needs of this paper, the metropolitan -individual or joined NUTS3- region constitutes the national subdivision metropolitan unit, in line with the “Metropolitan Region typology of NUTS3 regions” of Eurostat. The database of Eurostat is also the source of the data employed. Regarding the results of the analysis, the metropolitan pattern in the EU28 seems that is dictated in both periods by spatial concentration within the national metropolitan systems, rather than concentration between them, as far as employment and gross value added are concerned. This stands less true for labour productivity, which shows a higher Theil index between component. This pattern shows that deteriorates over time, although the inequalities between the national metropolitan systems seem to converge.
