Περίληψη: Aim-Background: This work aims to assess endothelial functionality employing electrical impedance measurements. Until now, endothelial functionality is investigated through ultrasound assessment of FMD (Flow-Mediated Dilation). This method, however, has several disadvantages such as: poor repeatability, low spatial resolution, necessity of expensive equipment and welltrained personnel. Material-Method: We execute experiments with volunteer divers that perform well-controlled dives, in an effort to correlate temporary, post-dive endothelial dysfunction with specific features of electrical signals obtained with a novel, EU patented, electrical impedance spectroscopy technique. Electrical measurements are validated against ultrasound ones for FMD estimation. The aforementioned electrical technique has been developed in the framework of a European Space Agency’ Research Project, for the detection of bubbles in the body of astronauts during Decompression Sickness. It employs innovative hardware and software (using advanced signal processing algorithms) that improve the spatial resolution about two orders of magnitude comparing to conventional electrical methods. Furthermore, the technique is simple to apply and the equipment is portable and cost-effective. Results: FMD decreases post-dive for 60±20 min, as expected due to the temporary endothelial dysfunction, and then increases progressively to reach the pre-dive value. In agreement with the ultrasound measurements, BPFstdev estimated parameter of electrical signals, indicating signal fluctuations for the frequency component 0.5-10 Hz, diminishes for 60±20 min and then is augmented to reach the initial value.
