Περίληψη: Silver and gold alloys have been widely applied in the making of precious objects during the byzantine and post byzantine eras. A major category is the ecclesiastical silver, which was used in the celebration of the liturgy (chalices, disks, asterisks, blessing and benediction crosses, processional crosses, liturgical fans, wedding crowns etc.). Silver, gold, copper and zinc alloys have also been used along with precious and semi precious gemstones for the decoration of the revetments of liturgical books. Our study focuses on postbyzantine ecclesiastical silver, kept in parish churches and monasteries of the Larissa and Volos districts: they are fairly unpublished and have not been studied with non-destructive analysis techniques. Up to date the Aghia region has been widely surveyed: forty-seven ecclesiastical objects, dating from mid-fifteenth to the end of the nineteenth century, were studied by means of analytical techniques for the identification of their chemical composition. They have also been digitized and widely studied. For the analysis of their chemical composition two techniques are involved: a portable hand-held X ray Florescence Spectrometer was used for the detection of silver alloys; a portable Raman Spectrometer was used for the analysis of the gemstones and the wood cores of benediction crosses. The results of this research show the Au-Ag Cu correlation along with the use of tin and zinc. These results are combined with the art historical study of the objects and their dedicatory inscriptions, if they have any, so as to obtain secure conclusions for the historical and ecclesiastical context of their manufacture.

This research is carried out by the project titled “Ecclesiastical silver: study and documentation using non-destructive techniques of ecclesiastic metal wares in Magnesia and Larissa districts (15th - 19th century)” (MIS 5005968) under the call for proposals titled “Researchers’ Support with Emphasis on Young Researchers” (EDULLL 34). The project is co-financed by Greece and the European Union (European Social Fund-ESF) by the Operational Programme titled “Human Resources Development, Education and Lifelong-Learning, 2014-2020”.
