Περίληψη: Τhis paper aims to discuss some of the results of an ongoing research project1 regarding economic activities of Greek post-soviet diasporas in Northern Greece and particularly in the city of Thessaloniki, after the "return to homeland" mass waves of migration of 1990's. Part of the post-soviet international diasporas, former Soviet Union (FSU) migrants in northern Greece materialize the ideal of "eternal return to homeland”: they mobilize kinship networks or they create commercial or cultural communities on the basis of language affiliation or nostalgia, “re-diasporising” diasporas through economic activity and recurrent movement. Taking advantage of the rise of informal economy in Russia during 1990's along with the loose border controls, some of them become shuttle migrants between Greece, Turkey and ex-soviet countries. They modify their economic activity and reconsider their migrant status according to the "ups and downs" in Greek, Russian and Georgian economy and the state policies. This study is based primarily in life-stories narratives. Through a series of semi-structured interviews, we explore the economic behavior of transnational migrants, who form diasporic groups, crisscross borders between Greece, Russia, Georgia and the Caucasus republics, (re)creating imaginary and material communities of giving, sharing or exchanging and of cultural affiliation. Moreover, through fieldwork in a company owned by FSU Greeks we aim to understand how large-scale businesses can be structured around kinship, diasporas and transnational networks. In this framework, we examine how these networks and communities shape local markets and economic interactions and whether survival and livelihood strategies embody moral premises. We address the question of the interaction between material conditions and identity issues, seeking to understand what motivates the mobilization of FSU migrants and the implications of "migration" itself.
